Cardiff-By-The-Sea

Cardiff-by-the-Sea (a/k/a “Cardiff” to locals) is a beach community located in south Encinitas, in North San Diego County, California. It is located just north of Solana Beach and the San Elijo Lagoon. Although Cardiff-by-the-Sea is part of the city of Encinitas, it has its own zip code of 92007.

Cardiff’s early roots were tied to farming until developer J. Frank Cullen of the United Kingdom relocated here and began building homes around 1911. It is believed that Cardiff is named after Mrs. Cullen’s hometown of Cardiff, Wales. When driving, cycling or walking around Cardiff, you will notice that many of the streets are named after cities in the UK such as Birmingham, Oxford, Chesterfield, and Manchester.

Cardiff has become a highly desired area to live in San Diego County with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, wonderful shopping areas, and a gorgeous State beach.  Also, Cardiff is known internationally by the surfing community for its renowned surf spots, Swami’s and the Cardiff Reef. Keep up on the tide and surf reports when you are ready to go and surf or swim.

If you visit Cardiff, be sure to stop by and see one the famous tourist attractions, a statue officially named the Magic Carpet Ride, but affectionately known as the Cardiff Kook. It’s located next to the San Elijo camping grounds and locals demonstrate their artistic and whimsical side by dressing up the statue on various occasions. Here’s a short video showing the history of the Kook. Have fun!
