If you have a garage attached to your San Diego home, chances are, it has an automatic door opener like ours in our own home. And if you go in and out of your garage 3 times a day, that means your door opener will operate 2,184 per year. That’s a lot of openings and closings, which I took for granted.
A few weeks ago, I opened our garage door at the end of the workday, parked the car in the garage, came into the kitchen and then heard a loud “pop” sound. I went back into the garage and could not operate the door with the automatic door control because the spring that lifts the door had broke.
After a service call and the payment of $350 later to replace one of the 2 springs, the service man told me that most springs, depending on the quality and usage, will last 7-10 years before breaking. He told me that I should lubricate the door hinges (the ones along the inside of the door if it’s a roll up type), the wheels and tracks with a silicone lubricant at least 2 times a year in order to keep things moving smoothly and to take stress off of the entire system. He also suggested using the front door whenever possible to minimize unnecessary door usage.
Doing this will help prolong the life of the automatic motor, the springs and the whole set up.
So, don’t forget to take care of your automatic garage door opener and springs, and of course, call a qualified professional to get specific advice about how best to maintain and service your garage door.
